Aromatherapy for Easter Baking
  • We love Easter. Any excuse for a celebration!   And no, it’s not just because we love a good Easter egg and a slap-up family meal!

Did you know that the name “Easter” actually derives from Oestre or Eostre, the Saxon goddess of the Dawn of the Year. Our cuddly Easter bunny was originally a fleet-footed Easter hare – an ancient symbol of fertility and regeneration – and our Easter eggs are symbols of birth and continuation.

So Easter is all about regeneration, about life renewing itself. No wonder the early Christians found it the perfect time to celebrate the resurrection of Christ.

It’s also a time when we take to the kitchen and get baking! In the UK, Hot Cross Buns are staple Easter fare, traditionally eaten on Good Friday. Of course you can buy them from the bakery and, if so, you can give them that home-baked aroma like this…

Take two teaspoons of cinnamon powder and add 1 drop of orange or lemon essential oil (whichever scent you love the best). Shake the powered-up powder around a clean dry tin. Unwrap your buns and store them in the tin – the aroma will infuse them and make them even more irresistible. If you’re feeling the urge to go mega-baker on this and make your own, we’d like to point you in the direction of one of our favorite food bloggers, Becky of English Mum. Her Spiced Cherry Hot Cross Bun recipe is pure heaven – and, truly, not that difficult to make. Find it here.

One tiny aroma-tweak we’d make is to substitute 150ml (2/3 of a cup) of orange hydrosol for the 150ml of water. We love it for the extra orange blast it gives. However if you’re the cinnamon type, use cinnamon hydrosol instead. Or experiment with lemon, grapefruit, vanilla, lime.

Once you’ve got the baking sorted, make sure you fill your home with fresh spring flowers - nothing beats the scent! Delicate narcissus, fragrant freesia or heady hyacinth – which is your favorite? Of course, we love color too but some of our most colourful flowery friends, such as tulip and daffodil, aren’t so supercharged on the scent front. So…cheat! Our spring flower diffuser blend will infuse your home with the giddy promise of spring.

Wake Up and Smell the Tulips Diffuser Blend

    • 4 drops Grapefruit
    • 2 drops Bergamot
    • 1 drop Ylang Ylang
    • 2 drops Coriander

Don’t forget to anoint yourself with a little bright Easter joy too. Which of our blends do we love best at this celebration? It has to be sunny, cheery Optimism, bright as a bunch of daffodils!
